Start the School Year Strong: Intentional Goals for a Successful Year
With a brand-new school year kicking off, it’s the perfect time to set your intentions and get clear on what you want this year to look like—both in and out of the classroom.
Whether you’re already a few weeks into the school year or just gearing up for day one, it’s never too late to hit the reset button and establish some meaningful goals. Taking a few minutes to reflect on what you do and don’t want for the year ahead can make all the difference. Setting clear boundaries and expectations helps us stay focused, balanced, and better prepared to handle everything this season throws our way.
Between planning lessons, building relationships with students, setting up routines, reviewing prior knowledge, and juggling all the extra responsibilities that come with back-to-school season—it’s a lot. That’s why starting with clear, realistic goals is essential.
Here are a few ideas to consider as you map out your goals for the year:
🌟 Goal Ideas for a Smooth & Successful School Year
✅ Set firm arrival and departure times.
(Example: Arrive 30 minutes early, leave no more than 1 hour after school.)
✅ Limit how much schoolwork comes home.
Use your planning periods and any spare time wisely so your evenings stay yours.
✅ Delete your school email from your phone.
Preserve your personal time by being available only during school hours.
✅ Facilitate only one club or extracurricular.
Protect your time and energy by focusing on just one (like French Club!).
✅ Say “No” to unpaid or uncompensated extras.
If it doesn’t come with a stipend or extra planning time—it’s okay to decline.
✅ Hold monthly catch-up/work days.
Use these days for students to get caught up while you plan, grade, or conference.
✅ Let students take more responsibility for their learning.
Utilize tools like missing work slips or retest request forms to build accountability.
